Terrain Types

  • Road

    Paved surfaces

    This race

Road races are run on asphalt or concrete. They offer consistent, predictable surfaces ideal for fast times and personal records.

  • Trail

    Natural terrain

Trail races take you off-road onto dirt paths, rocks, roots, and varied surfaces. They require trail shoes with grip and more attention to foot placement.

  • Track

    Laps of a 400 m oval

Track races are run lap after lap on a synthetic 400 m oval. The distance is exact and the surface is the same everywhere, so times compare better than anywhere else. Most runners race in spikes or light racing shoes.

  • Cross country

    Grass, mud and loops

Cross country races are run on grass, mud and park paths, often over several laps of a marked loop. Many runners race them in spikes, and placings count more than times.
